Hot and Humid Summer It's Been.

23 August 2007 [Thursday]

It rained last night - was so nice to hear thunder when I work up this morning as we are in a severe drought and need about 15" of rain to get back to normal. They said it would require a tropical storm to get us back to near normal! All the grass is totally dead everywhere..brown and crunchy. We have been trying to water our bushes to keep them alive as best as we could.
I most likely have to work late tonight as they are upgrading our QADB server so I volunteered to help test it. Rebecca said we could come in 1/2 day late today as we will probably have to stay late. So after dropping Carson off this morning, Amanda, Keegan, Ian and I went to the Morrisville park to meet Denise and her kids. It was so hot and humid, but we still played for about :45 minutes and then all the kids wanted to go. So I headed towards work around 11am, while everyone else went back to our house to play. Hope they had a good time.
Got into work and John Littlejohn and I went to Pharoh's for lunch. I've never been there. It was OK and pretty reasonably priced, as I got the Chicken sandwich with bacon and blue cheese. Nice to have a little change once-in-awhile. I expected to eat at home before I came in, but so much stuff came up in the morning that I ended up going into work about two hours early and thus didn't eat lunch yet.

20 - 22 August 2007 [Monday- Wednesday]

H-O-T! Ugh, very miserable with the humidity and heat still. Don't recall anything unusual. Worked from home on Wednesday as usual. Keegan had his dentist appointment in the morning with Amanda. She found his first new tooth coming in! On the bottom middle. It's actually coming in behind his baby tooth, which is just a little bit loose, but Dr. Dunsmoor said she would give it two weeks and then it would have to be pulled. So Amanda is going to be really working it back and forth to get it out before then. He seems very excited about it and we talked a little bit about the Tooth Fairy last night while everyone was brushing their teeth. We went on a bike ride last night (Wed). Rode to the YMCA and we all played for an hour or so which was nice. They were all very tired when we got home and fell asleep quickly. On Tuesday, I had my first welding class at Wake Tech! Can't believe I finally did it. Class didn't meld too well, as it was a new teacher and he is totally not prepared. Hope he gets better, but I'm not holding my breath.

19 August 2007 [Sunday]

So glad the van purchase is over. Have some buyers remorse, but I know as the days go by, it will be less and less until that feeling is gone.
I played outside with the kids this morning while it was still pretty nice out, and Amanda switched over the carseats to the minivan. Got the truck vacumed out mostly. We are going to take the truck to the beach still I think so we can drive on the sand if we want, so we left a lot of the stuff in there for the time being. I don't think the minivan will have enough miles on it yet, to want to drive it on the expressway for 4 hours straight by then. We also want to take our bikes with, and the van won't have enough room for all that stuff.
After that was all done, we went to Walmart to get 2 new junior size tennis rackets and some new tennis balls as we only had 2 old ones. Found some nice cheap ones and a bag of balls. Carson is really acting up again (the past several days) and really got Amanda upset with him.
We got home, had lunch and then Keegan, Carson and I went to the YMCA tennis courts and hit balls. Ian was asleep, so Amanda stayed with him and enjoured the peace and quiet I think. They loved playing on the court as did I, but the heat was horrible. We all only lasted about :30 minutes. I was worried about Keegan overheating as he was running all over and was beat red. I kept making him drinks lots of water and rest once-in-awhile. They had the most fun searching around the courts for tennis balls that people shot over the fence and didn't retrieve. We found 7 more balls, almost all looked brand new! It was like watching them on an Easter egg hunt. We are going to come back in fall sometime and just walk around in the woods and search for balls. They are all excited about that.
We took a bath and then made some dinner. Kids actually went back outside later as we saw Alex and TJ out there. Keegan really likes to play with them. I just wish he had more kids than that to play with. Hopefully as he gets older he'll meet more in the area that he can ride his bike too.

18 August 2007 [Saturday]

We were out of the house by 10am heading to Mark Jacobsen Toyota in Durham. They are a one price, no haggle dealership. They had a leftover 2007, but the price was ridiculous, so we focused on the 2008's. Again, the price came in around $27,000 before Doc, TTL, so it's putting it into the $28,000 area which is just too much for us. So we stopped off at SouthPoint mall to get lunch and let the kids play since it was right there and was too hot to play outside once again. Was enjoyable as we had no agenda for the rest of the day. Keegan and Carson got too wild there, and ran into a boy who started crying. So we made them leave and won't be bringing them back for a long while as punishment. On the way home, I remembered that Eric and Denise just bought their 2007 Honda Odyssey at Crown Honda in Durham yesterday, which is also right by the mall, so I figured it was a great time to stop by and get a price to compare to Cary Honda.
Well 2 1/2 hours later we ended up driving home with our new van!!!! I couldn't believe it, but we did. Beautiful Slate Green color we both love. Light grey interior. We got a great deal on a 2007 EX model - $24,400 + doc + ttl. This put the van at thousands LESS than any Toyota we had priced at four other dealers so far. The Honda was just too much cheaper to ignore and we knew we couldn't justify spending so much more for what basically amounted to a nicer 8th seat in the Toyota. Salesman - George - was really nice and from Jamiaca. He said it was his 3rd week at this dealer and we were the 5th vehicle he had sold. The finance manager was a jerk - I think it all stemmed from us not wanting to use his finance company, so of course he earns nothing from the deal. We went in with an e-Loan check and a check from our money market, and their interest rate was not a big enough difference to make it worth looking thru all that paperwork. I made sure to tell the sales manager on the way out that his finance guy could have been a lot nicer. We'll probably go back when we need some service work as they offer free shuttle rides to/from Southpoint, so it's easy to entertain the kids while waiting. It's nice that there is a Honda dealer right in Cary as well just a couple miles from us if we need to go there too. Kids rode home in the truck as we didn't want to transfer the car seats there. I was so glad to get it done and be done looking. I felt like all this free time finally was available to us now that all the searching was over!
At night we headed to the YMCA for their ice cream social and movie night. Movie was High School Musical 2 - HORRIBLE! Carson fell asleep and Keegan and Ian played on the slides in the dark while I watched them. They had a good time at least - and the ice cream was good too. Nice to be out of the house on top of it and to let them get some energy out after being cooped up inside for most of the day.

17 August 2007 [Friday]

16 -14 August 2007 [Thursday - Tuesday]

Can't recall anything out of the ordinary.

13 August 2007 [Monday]

I worked from home in the morning and then at 10:15am went into Keegans school as I was volunteering. First time I volunteered for his 1st grade class. It was fun and the hour went by quick! I didn't get to work with Keegan, but he had fun seeing me in there. I put $9 on his lunch account when I left as well as he was down to his list $.05 cents! :) He's been buying milks lately which I'm really happy about - he's so good, as he picks out plain milk, even though they have chocolate and strawberry to choose from! I'm so proud of him for making that choice all by himself.
After that, went straight to work as I had a 1pm meeting that was quick. Now spending the rest of the day trying to get the JAR tool working for my demo to the QA folks on Thursday and of course it's not working on two environments I have tried.
Amanda after dropping Carson at school this morning, headed over to the Honda dealer to try the van out. She doesn't like the seating either compared to the Toyota, so we know for 100% we want the Toyota now. She stopped at Raleigh Toyota as well and tried the car seats out and they all fit without issue. Phew. I remember a month ago, we still had no clue as to what vehicle we wanted. Really takes a long time ro research a car and line up test drives, prices, etc. Tomorrow we will likely purchase one after work. Either from Raleigh (if they come down on price) - or direct from Sanford (as the van itself is in Sanford and we know that!).

10 - 12 August 2007 [Sunday]

Waited too long to update this, so I can't remember what happened here. Sorry!

9 August 2007 [Thursday]

We had our 4 hour quarterly meeting. What a waste of time. Very disappointing and nothing was said of stock options as I was hoping.
After work, I drove to the Raleigh Toyota store and worked out a price with Jan. She got down to $25,753 - but that's about $753 more than I want to pay. Took a long time there as she was with another customer and I had to wait as they work on 100% comission. Got home from that and we decided to head to the Ants movie at night. It was warm out and it looked like rain, so it was not crowded at all and very nice because of that. Kids watched the whole movie! Nice night and once-in-awhile a breeze would come by and cool it off even more. With the storm front passing thru (but no rain) really helped cool it as well!

8 August 2007 [Wednesday]

Worked from home today luckily. Last night we had a few power glitches. Turned out this morning on the radio there was an accident at Kildaire Farm and Cary Parkway which knocked a pole down. That major intersection was closed all day and night!!! So traffic would be a mess and I would have had to take a longer way to/from work.
Had a conference call at work to announce finally that we will migrate our RMS platform to .Net (and not Java). Tomorrow is our big 4 hour quarterly meeting. In the 5 years I have worked here now, we have never had a meeting that has been this long for our quarterly. I'm anxious about it - hopefully some good will be announced finally.
The temperature gauge in the kitchen showed 105.5F as the high today!!!! and that's in the shade !!!! It felt like it too.
Amanda worked and Carson was her first patient of the day. I went back in at 10am and picked him up. He did great as usual.
I worked a bit more at night after the kids went to bed, while Amanda searched online for minivans. We called a couple of dealers on some used ones we liked and they both had sold them. Ugh. It makes me not even want to look at them anymore.

7 August 2007 [Tuesday]

100F today. No relief in site. 101F predicted for tomorrow. I can't remember it being this hot in ages. I've been awake since 2:45am today. Woke up with bad stomach cramps from the spinach dip I ate last night. Couldn't go back to sleep but I know I will go to bed early tonight. Nothing else new. We are still trying to decide on a minivan. I'm 90% sure of a Toyota now. Now it's a matter of do we buy used, or a new 2007 with a $1500 rebate, or wait for the 2008 that are to arrive any week now and have all the 2007 'options' as 'standard' finally....AGGGH!

6 August 2007 [Monday]

Still super hot and humid. 99F today. Went to work and we all went and saw Amanda play a 6:45pm volleyball game. I really enjoy watching those, but the kids just like to climb on the rolled up wrestling mats. Keegan and I walked home as that's what he wanted and the rest drove back. Nice night and nice to get out of the house because it's been too hot to play outside for any length of time.

5 August 2007 [Sunday]

So hot and humid, that we canceled our plans to look for cars and instead headed to the YMCA pool as soon as they opened at 1pm. Before we left I cleaned up the garage a little and built a wooden swing to replace Ians baby swing as he's big enough for something else now. The kids love it once they tried it. I made it extra wide and they like to set their sand toys on it and prented different things. Stayed at the YMCA until 4pm. It was GREAT and very refreshing. Annastasia was there with her mom, so Carson was excited and Noah's mom showed up but Noah wasn't there. Still Keegan thought it was cool that one of his friends' moms' was there as well.

Headed home and had dinner and a relaxing night. Amanda and I watched 'The Prestige' good movie about two dueling magicians. Very twisted ending which I liked.

4 August 2007 [Saturday]

HOT! HUMID! Horrible weather we are having. No relief in site. Suppose to hit the 100's next week.

We went to Home Depot in the morning for their monthly craft project for the kids. They built an art caddy this time. Was fun as we haven't done it in awhile.

Then we stopped in and chatted with Dawn for a bit. Nothing new really. Next stop was to Target so Keegan could pick out a new birthday gift for Dylan's party today as the one Amanda got earlier didn't have all the pieces in it. Luckily Amanda noticed this before wrapping it. After Target we headed to Kroeger to food shop. Didn't go very well as the kids get too wild and wanted to drive their own little carts. I lost my temper with Keegan in the parking lot and really regret it. I felt so bad the rest of the weekend and hope I never have that happen again. I love all the kids so much, but I just snapped. The stress of food shopping and them not listening just built up as we were trying to unload the groceries in the truck and the heat didn't help.

We all drove to the Morrisville Community Park at 2:30 for the party - can't believe they are having a party in this heat. I dropped Amanda and Keegan off and then the rest of us went to the Outlet malls in morrisville to return the cast iron pan Amanda got as it was just too big and $30, versus the 1" smaller one for only $15 at Walmart that I will get instead.

Got back to the park and the party was in full swing. Despite the heat the kids were tearing around and Carson and Ian joined in. Sweat was everywhere!!! But they had great fun and we found a great new park to play in once it cools down...literally right across the street from Keegans Elementary school. Amanda told me later that Dylan's parents only brought 1 gallon of water and some juice boxes for all those kids and parents with the temps in the middle to high 90's. Unbelievable! Thankfully a parent took it upon themself to goto the store and get some more water and an ice box. They forgot a lighter for the candles on the cake and no gift bags were handed out either (which is fine by me, but just goes to show that it appeared they have never done this before). Still the most important thing is all the kids had a blast and wore themselves out.

3 August 2007 [Friday]

Rode the Guzzi into work today. Going to be hot going home, but wanted a change. Home Depot has their monthly kids craft tomorrow and then Keegan has a birthday party for a friend in the afternoon at a community park. It's going to be really hot there! 97F! Don't know what those parents were thinking having it outside in August in NC. He's going to not like it probably. Amanda gets to take him since I took him to Pump-It-Up for the last birthday party a few weeks back.

2 August 2007 [Thursday]

Went into the office today. Same old routine basically. Picked up some pizza's on the way home as Amanda just didn't feel like cooking.

1 August 2007 [Wednesday]

Worked from home today. Alex and TJ took the bus in the morning today so Keegan was really excited about that. Nice to see him out there with friends instead of by himself.

31 July 2007 [Tuesday]

Actually worked from home today as Amanda offered to work another day to fill in for someone and we can always use the extra money. Sure wish this heat would go away. It's so hot and humid out and the mosquitos are horrible.
